Sylvie Says

Here's a list of words Sylvie says at this point in time (~17 months):

Yay-eees (yes) This one is my favorite. For a while it was all she said- so sort of her first "real" word. She used it appropriately. If you asked her a question and the answer was "no," she'd just vehemently shake her head. But it you got it right, she'd say, "Yay-eees!" (for example, "Sylvie, do you want Cheerios?" headshake. "Do you want Goldfish?" "Yay-eees!") I was hoping she's never develop the verbal, "no." But in the past week, we've heard that too. sigh. :p
uh-oh
no-no This obviously means no. But also, when used with a point to her nose it means "nose nose" and it's her way of telling us she needs to blow her nose.
Bay-dee! (Brady) This is my other favorite. She began calling her brother by name about a week ago and it makes me laugh every single time. She loves loves loves her brother and is constantly calling him, "Baaaaaay-deeeee! Baaaaay-deeee!" It's the cutest thing!

bee-bee (baby)
uh-tee/uh-tay (okay) This is Sylvie's personal touch on the Buckwheat classic "oh-tay!"
shoe
ah-poh (apple, hippo, and open- ha!) She still supplements her verbalization with gestures so you always know what she's talking about when she gives you context. (for example, when Mimi was here last week, she had her back turned and Sylvie said, "ah-poh, ah-poh" and Mimi replied, "Oh, you want an apple." and I said, "No, she's standing at the pantry and needs your help to open the door." b/c Sylvie was standing there pointing. She's very resourceful!)
up
up-ah, up-ah / aya-pay (airplane) This one is evolving. Sylvie's very interested in airplanes and used to say "up-ah, up-ah" when she saw one. I would respond and say, "Yes, up up in the sky. That's an airplane." Lately it's been evolving into "aya-pay" when she sees or hears one overhead.
sit/seat She sometimes uses these interchangeably, as her brother did too. It cracks me up b/c it's almost always repeated. So it's "seat seat" and patting the spot next to her when she wants you to sit next to her or "sit" and pointing when she wants to go in her high chair.
moe (more, sometimes accompanied with the sign for "more")
cheese Another double meaning here- it literally means the food, but often also means that Sylvie's spotted the camera- "cheeeese!" Actually she often calls the camera "cheese" too and points at it saying, "cheeese!" even when we're not taking her picture.
tzee-tzee (kitty)
peees! (please- always accompanied with a sign- which is actually the sign for monkey rather than please...it started off as "please" but a little laziness and some excitement have somehow turned this sign in to "monkey")
seh-syoo or sometimes dayn-doo (thank you) It's a stretch, I know. But she has the right inflection and use, so her meaning is understood. Also, she sometimes uses the sign to accompany her verbalization.
wa-wa (water)
moo (cow)
hat (hat or helmet) This is always accompanied by a pat on the head and usually means she wants her bike helmet.
baw (ball)
boo (balloon or boot) Again, the key to understanding is in watching her gesture or point. Also, "balloon" is usually SQUEALED most excitedly and repeated, "BOO! BOO!")
buh-KKK (book) She over-enunciates the guttural "k" sound at the end...perhaps to differentiate "book" from "boot or balloon???" :)
shhh! (quiet) If you say the word quiet (even in passing, in a conversation, Sylvie will put her finger in front of her mouth and go "shhh!"
buh boo (bubble) It makes me laugh when Brady sometimes seems to understand her better than we do. This morning Sylvie was saying, "buh boo buh boo" and I wasn't really paying attention (b/c we were in the kitchen and there were no bubbles in sight). Brady was the one who answered her by saying, "Sylvie, Daddy has bubbles on his phone we can pop." (Brett has an app for that- go figure!) lol!!!
btw, I'm back-blogging here so I have to add this in. Just today (like 1.5 weeks later) I realized what Sylvie meant when she was saying "buh boo" in the kitchen. To her, there really Were bubbles in sight. She was looking at the vegetable oil in the pantry (the label slipped off). I laughed out loud today when I realized it Really does look like her bubbles...see? (pink bubbles on the left, label-less vegetable oil on the right)

dah/woof woof (dog) Her word "dog" is almost always followed by "woof woof!" It's very cute!

heh-woah (hello) She's like a Pavlov's dog- anything that resembles a phone ring (our phone's email notification, a sound on tv, or even when our phones really are ringing) causes Sylvie to put her hand up to her ear, tilt her head, and say, "Heh-woah?!"
YAY! Okay, so it's not really a word, per se. But this is another "Pavlov's dog reaction." Whenever (and I truly mean whenever) Sylvie either sees or hears the garage door opening/closing she yells, "YAY!" and throws her hands up. It's Hilarious!

nigh-nigh (night-night)
poo poo She tells us when she has a dirty diaper now...unfortunately this skill developed after a wicked diaper rash where it actually hurt her when she went potty. So now after she goes, she points to her diaper and says, "poo poo. poo poo" to which I say, "Okay, do you want me to change your diaper?" to which she responds, "Yay-eees." :)
